Nathan Deisman DJ
I have been DJ’ing for about ten years now after purchasing my first mix CD back in 1996 – John Aquiviva – Transmissions. Currently I have Saturday residency at The Bank Ultra Lounge in Edmonton where I play uplifting Trance and Progressive.
My early musical taste was formed during the early years in Nanaimo and Edmonton. While in Nanaimo I was listening to mostly American techno and house including early Roger Sanchez, DJ Micro and DJ Keoki. Then I got exposed to the European sounds progressive house and trance Sasha, John Digweed, Nic Warren and Paul Oakenfold. I was experimenting a lot with a 4 track mixer where I was sampling from a wide range of sources (Star Wars movies, TV, mix CD’s and Tape) and creating 90 minute mix tapes and distributing.
When I moved to Edmonton, a much larger music scene in 2000, I was able to attend many of the shows. These included the Jimmy Van M, John Digweend and Sasha tour at Northlands and even Tiesto playing at the ReBar (now Lucky 13) on Whyte Ave in 2001 to a raging crowd of 150 people.
I purchased my first set of turntables (Numark Axis 2) in 2003 and a simple Numark mixer, good enough to learn how to beat match and mix. Since then I’ve upgrade to Numark Axis 9s which have many features, and a Numark mixer with cut offs, good enough to play and learn to do some tricks, and all for under $800. I don’t have any preferred mixer or CD deck, as I’ve played on everything from records, to Serato, to Pioneer DVD systems worth 20K.
I still believe it’s not the equipment, but the ability to sequence tracks and build a nice sound and atmosphere, while developing a unique style of uplifting melodies, beautiful vocals, and emotion.
